Exactly what I needed, 6/27/2017

loridee from Pittsburgh, PA, USA

This was an easy way to add enough shelf to my cage. This was a very easy purchase, it arrived promptly, the shelf was correct.

fits well, 8/19/2015

SueC from Waterbury, CT, USA

I have two critter nation cages and some lovable yet destructive chinchillas. They enjoy chewing on the shelf pans and have turned their cages into a huge mess. The shelves I purchased from Ferret.com fit my cages perfectly and now the cages look brand new. Both my chins and I thank you.

Great shelves for a great cage, 6/29/2015

We needed two more shelves for our double decker cage that now has six shelves. Our guinea pigs LOVE the cage - it's better than anything we've used, including CnC cages.

It works fine but..., 5/28/2015

JohnLI from

This is the same shelf that comes with the critter nation cage. It comes with the metal supports (shelf) & the plastic floor (cover). Unfortunately the metal shelf just has wire supports for the plastic floor. When you're pet chews through the plastic floor he has a whole that he can fall through. My prairie dog enjoys chewing the floor so I wind up purchasing the entire shelf pretty often because you can't just buy the plastic floor. As a result it becomes costly.

Ferret Nation Replacement Shelf, 3/29/2015

Wish they would have made these all along! Stops my business from dropping food on top of the ones below. Now they have a nicer place to hoard their kibble and small play toys!

Nice replacement, 9/24/2014

DMichaels from Coconut Creek, FL

It is nice to be able to replace parts in this cage, without purchasing a whole new cage. I run a rescue and have 11 FN cages. It would be bad if I had to replace each one.

Better than the original, 8/14/2014

sgiorio from Wyandotte, MI, USA

Was originally disappointed that I could not find just the plastic piece for my shelving unit so ordered this. What a delight it was to see they have made design improvements. Now is they miss the pan it does not go splashing down the levels and instead is contained in the pan. Bravo Ferret Nation

Wish I could have just bought the plastic shelf, 7/14/2014

CiCi from New York

My chinchillas chew through the plastic part of the shelving and would like to purchase just the plastic shelf and not the wire shelf frame nor the hooks. My suggestion is to offer the plastic portion of the shelves for replacement, for those critters who like to chew through the plastic (the wire portion is VERY durable).

Excellent product., 6/19/2014

Rena from York, PA, USA

I had to get these shelves because the previous shelves for my critter nation had no lip around the edges. Ferret.com had the cheapest price for these shelves too which I was very grateful for. Shipping was fast and the shelves weren't damaged like most Midwest products are on Ground delivery. The only downfall is the plastic is cheaper than the plastic used for the cage trays and my rats are more drawn to chew it for some reason though they've never chewed any other floor in the cage. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Does what it says, 6/17/2014

bbailey from

We have 2 of the Critter Nation Cages. The first is older and came with the old style flat shelves. We ordered these to replace the original shelves. Our rabbits really like them, and seem to feel more comfortable with the raised edges. They are spending more time on the shelves, effectively enlarging their usable space.

Minor Improvements Needed, 10/11/2013

PrairieDogPalace from EP, TX

I use these in the Critter Nation for Prairie Dogs. For the price, you receive the metal shelf frame that loosely attaches to the cage, a plastic tray, and a pair of mounts to hook YOUR ladder into. NOTE: It does NOT include a replacement ladder. The shelf frame has two angled posts that slide into the adjustable height openings on YOUR cage, but do not lock in securely. (I thread zip ties through the frame and onto the cage to keep it from getting knocked out of hole and falling onto anyone below.) The plastic shelf lays atop the metal shelf frame loosely & can (and does) get lifted off from below. (I have to dremel holes into the shelf and use zip ties to secure it to shelf) Plastic is low quality & easily chewed up within days - if you have avid chewers. The trays are not replacable on their own, you have to buy the whole shelf unit. The price has gone up over two years from $12.99 with no notable improvements to justify it. I'd still recommend it for more docile critters.

Love the shelf. But..., 6/21/2013

Ferretcat from

Having shelves from a previous purchase, I was not ready for what I received. The shelves, when placed properly, are 1.5 inches higher in the front than where they're attached to the cage. The frames are somewhat warped, so you have issues with the level from side to side too. The plastic tray that sits on the frame is of poor quality.

bmg1 from

I have four ferrets, all the same age, about 1 1/2 years old and sometimes they just don't feel like going to the bathroom in their designated spot. Since I rent, this really helps keep the mess off the floor so I can clean it up easier.

Nifty Little Shelves!, 8/30/2011

Chelsi Curtiss from Darlington, PA

I read the other reviews which refered to the possible injuries of the old FN shelves so I'm not going to repeat what they all said but I am really very happy with the design of this new shelf. The possibility of injury seems pretty limited and the only drawback that I saw was that the front end of the shelf sits a little high. I also do not use the ramps in my cage (so that my ferrets use their muscles to jump onto the shelves) so I didn't even know that you had to change the ramps but evidently you do. You get the modification kit (two little black things) with the shelf and it doesn't come with the actual ramp itself so don't buy it thinking that it will! As far as the price...well I always think things should cost less than they do but I don't think that the price is bad. Maybe it could come down a little and I'd be really happy but the $12.99 I bought it for wasn't bad. All in all I really love the new shelves.

With some slight modifications..., 5/22/2011

TINA JONES from El Paso, TX

I bought two of these for my 4 prairie dogs in a double level critter nation cage. The new design is much more chewable (had to buy the scatter guards for bottom pans just to prevent more of those from being chewed up). With one good push, my PDs would be able to lift the pan from the rack, so I drilled a few small holes & secured the pan to the rack with zip ties. I also used zip ties to secure the shelf to the cage. *Safety first! I'd love to see scatter guards available for the shelves.

Initial Review of New Ferret Nation Shelves, 5/22/2011

Parathalyn from TX

I recently purchased the new Ferret Nation replacement shelves. Overall, the design appears to be to an improvement over the original shelves. I didn't have any problems with the old shelves during the many years I've had the Ferret Nation cage, but there were reports of the old shelves causing injuries. The original shelves were plastic sheets whose corners inserted into the wire frame and had direct attachments for the ramps. The new shelves are a wire frame with a half tray attached to the top. The raised edges of these half trays are very convenient for cleaning and containing messes. They also come with some hardware to attach the old ramps to these new shelves. They do NOT, however, come with new interior ramps--as implied by other reviews and the pictures used for this item. I was VERY disappointed with that since my old ramps are quite worn and I was looking forward to new ramps attached to these new shelves. Beyond the lack of attached ramps, there are a few other shortcomings with the new shelves. The biggest of these is that the ramp between levels no longer sits flush with the bottom shelf because of the raised shelf edge. Instead, one side of the ramp sits on the raised edge and the other side hangs about a centimeter up in the air...until a ferret tries to go down the ramp. This makes for some unsteady ferrets and more noise as they move between levels. Another issue is that the front of the shelves aren't attached to the frame (they attach in the back), so my boys keep trying to push the shelves up while standing on the ramps. I've tried a few things, but nothing so far has proven effective in keeping the ferrets from "flapping" the shelves. Overall, I would say that they are worth the purchase if you are looking to avoid the possibility of injury (reports are very infrequent, so it might not be worth the worry) and something easier to clean. However, the obvious poor design issues make the new shelves a bit of a burden over the original shelf designs. You'll have to break out the tools to figure out a way to get the mid-level ramp to sit flush and keep the shelf trays attached to the frames. The oversight of not including new interior ramps with the new shelf design is a big negative in my opinion. If they had included the attached ramps, I would have said these were reasonably priced. But, without the ramps and with the glaring design issues, I would have liked to see these priced under $10, if not at around $5. There just are not enough materials and quality workmanship in these shelves to justify the price.

Thank You!, 5/4/2011

Lindsay W from Fairhaven, MA

I can't tell you about how many horror stories I have heard about the old shelves; ferrets losing toes, feet, and lives. These new shelves are the answer many people have been looking for! No longer do I have to cover the shelves in duct tape! There is one thing that I had to do- the shelves are quite heavy and if knocked down I imagine they could do a bit of damage. My youngest girl learned how to knock the old shelves down constantly and I found if I zip tied the shelf to the cage it stopped. I did the same for the new shelves and I haven't had one issue! I have 6 ferrets that are bouncing on these day in and day out. Small hooks attach the ladders to the shelves now and if you have a determined fuzzy they can push them around a bit but even my two kits haven't been able to knock them off! Thank you so much for providing these! I feel much better with my fuzzies in their home now!

Awesome New Shelves, 4/20/2011

These new shelves are great! I am going to replace all of my old shelves with these. They can be covered with an old pillow case and stay clean. There is no wire for poop to get stuck in if they go on the shelf. Super excited about these new shelves.

Very Disappointed With The New Shelves, 2/25/2011

SANDRA SALCEDO from Pound, WI

These shelves came with my Ferret Nation 142 cage. I do not like the new shelf design. The old design was much better. 1) There is nothing to snap the plastic shelf to the metal part it lays on to keep it in place. This makes it very easy for ferrets to push it up, and out of place. 2) The ladder that goes to the top level doesn't lay flat on the shelf. It lays on the lip of the shelf, and there is a pretty good size gap between the shelf and the ladder. 3) The ladders doesn't stay on the shelves very well with the clips. Its very easy for ferrets to push the ladders out of place. I think they should of either kept the old design, or they should of done a better job when designing these new shelves. I am very disappointed with them.

New style shelf, 12/25/2010

Whimsy from

The newely revamped shelf is a huge improvement over the previous one. It adds extra floor space and with the lip helps keep litter contained. It also makes a safe landing for the area where the drop down ladder rests. We can finally use this new style (with some slight modifications) with our chinchilla rescue. If anyone is interested, they can see our website for info on second level cage surrounds at Whimsy's Menagerie & Chinchilla Rescue.
