Gentle Leader Dog Headcollar

Millions of dog owners today enjoy the benefits of stress-free walks thanks to the Gentle Leader Headcollar. ·         Allows dog to open its mouth to eat, drink, pant, fetch, and bark while wearing headcollar

Dog hates it, fi, 8/18/2012

FeralStars from Syracuse, NY

These work well but even after hours and days of trying to get the dog to accept it she still hates this product and if it is not sized right it will cause the fur under the eyes to be worn off. I switched her to the harness this company makes and she still walks nice without the wearing away of her fur or fighting to be free of the product.

If this doesn't work your are doing something wron, 6/5/2012

Dan O from Great Mills, MD

I have trained dogs and horses for many years and for my dogs I was a avid fan of the choke chain. I never ever had a problem training a dog to heal on and off leash until I got a rescued 5 year old Weimaraner. I tried for over three months to get him to walk on a slack leash. I don't believe in letting a dog choke himself by constant pulling. Normally a voice que short tap works just fine because eventually all you need is the voice que. In frustration, decided to use the Gentle Lead as a last resort. The reason was that with a horse if you control the head the rest will follow. So the first thing I did was put the DVD aside and figured out how to put it on my dog because I am just sooo smart. It worked OK he was easier to control but the nose band would go sideways thus messing with his mouth and eyes. On a whim I decided to watch the DVD and discovered that I wasn’t smart at all and didn't put it on correctly. Once I did that the dog was almost perfect and after a week of leash training there is no pulling at all and he responds great with voice ques. Never forget some/most dogs think pulling is a game unless they are taught differently. Yes, the collar is thin but it doesn't have to be more than that because there is no problem with pulling once they get they understand what is expected of them and after all it is the owner’s responsibility to teach them. I will never use a choke chain again. Control the head and the rest will follow. BTW I didn't buy the Gentle Lead at Dog.com but wish I did because it is cheaper here.

You have to use it correctly, 4/6/2012

Golden Lover from Bloomgington, IL

The instructions say it must be tight, so tight that you barely slip one finger under it. Any looser and most of the problems noted in other reviews will happen. My girl got used to it and tolerated it well. I do think the straps are too narrow for larger dogs and that overall quality could be better. But, if your dog pulls incessantly, I think it is worth a try.

Fair product!, 4/4/2012

MyLabador from Bloomfield Hills,Mi.

I am a K-9 trainer & when leach training K-9's I used to only use this leader & it either worked or it didn't. It works great for some dogs but other dogs may fuss or try to pull it off. I always felt with some dogs if the strap that goes over the bridge of their nose was wider and possibly padded it might make it easier for some dogs to accept it. Once they accept it "it works super". Now this same company has a new model with improvements to the "strap that rides over the bridge of the nose it's made wider & padded" thus the new model works better on some K-9's that reject this original model. If a K-9 rejects this model rather than have them get frustrated and reject the leader all together" I put one of the newer models on and the difference "can be night & day" for some dogs. Its nice to have a choice with either the original model & the new one" so if this model doesn't work try this companies new model with the wider nose strap with padding on it. The new model is a bit more money but these "leaders really do work" Cheers

Love it, 9/8/2011

Jbrooks from MA

I can't walk my rottie with anything else. She is even completely controllable when a squirrel runs by! And it's so much nicer than a prong choke collar

AWESOME, 7/2/2011

JLiz from Albany, NY

My girlfriend and I have a shepherd mix who pulls a lot - nothing worked until we tried this. He pawed at his face when we first put it on, but after a little encouragement he got the hang of it - he's a completely different dog on the leash now. It's also very easy to put on and adjust even though the instructions it comes with are a little convoluted. If your dog can't get used to the gentle leader, try having her wear it around the house (with supervision of course.) Our dog was fine once he realized he could eat, drink, bark, etc. with it.

Works like a charm, 10/6/2010

HappyLeaderUser from Chippewa Falls, WI

I have a black lab. High energy who we have not been able to break from the PULLING habbit. He pulls no matter what! He will rip my arm off if he spots a squirl or rabbit on our walks, and made it impossible for my son to take him on his paper route for exercise. The moment this leash is put on, our black lab immedietly walks right next to us, will not run after squirls or rabbits. And I can literally walk him with the leash on my pinky finger!! Fantastic product. Doesn't restrict his ability to drink or pant or even eat... makes walking my dog an enjoyable experience now that hundreds of dollars at dog training classes hasn't been able to pruduce!

NEVER GO BACK TO YOUR OLD COLLAR, 6/22/2010

Karen from

i have a lab an extreme puller. walks were hurtful and never fun. i used to have a harness, but she didnt mind it. we just bought this and miracles in minutes! she walked right buy my side the whole time on our walk but i have to say if you dont know anyone to help you fit it right on your dog, watch the video at least twice or watch it and follow it with your gentle leader and dog

Dissappointed, 9/7/2009

Georganne from California

I have tried every type of collar out there including this one. I understand the concept of the collar, but my Rottweiler absolutely refuses to wear it. She freaks out and manages to get out of it. When she did wear it at the beginning, I could see how the potential success of this collar would work, but not in my case. The quality is on the low end with the straps being very thin, no padding, and plastic clip tighteners. (Maybe if it was redesigned...?) I have gone back to my Herm Sprenger prong collar. You pay a lot, but the quality is unmatched. And yes, my Rott still pulls - big time!

Instruction Video a Must, 8/3/2009

R. Burley from South Boardman, MI

This lead is truly a miracle, we were leary at first when a colleague of my wife's mentioned that the one she bought didn't work and was useless. My wife later learned she didn't watch the instructional video. After watching the video I can see why it wouldn't work if you didn't watch the video, maybe that's why you find the words "MUST WATCH VIDEO"on the package, anyway, it works great.

dogs are different, 6/11/2009

laura trcka from key largo, FL

the gentle leader is great for those dogs that will tolerate it. I sometimes walk 20 shelter dogs a day. The strongest pullers (usually pit bulls) are often the most resistant. After discovering the walk follows the placement of the headcollar, dogs usually get over it. But a rare few never do. If your dog absolutely won't wear one, try a slip lead at the very top of the neck, under the jaw. when he starts to tug, you need to correct immediately. If you let him put his nose to the ground you will have to keep re-adjusting. Keep his head up, and he will stop trying to sniff the ground after a little while.

Amazing, 6/3/2009

AnneMarie from Tallahassee, FL

I have used this collar on 2 very crazy, and strong, dogs for about 8 months now. It's true they adjust & can still pull a little; but as long as I reel them in on the leash, I have total control.

Didn't help after he got used to it, 5/21/2009

Kait from Seattle, WA

Our dog walked ok with it the first few times, but then didn't care about the uncomfortable pressure when he pulled. Even though I kept adjusting and adjusting it, our 90lb 3 yr old lab would pull so hard the bottom loop would pull to the side and the top loops would squish up into his eye. You'd think he'd not like that and stop pulling but apparently he didn't mind. He began losing hair on his nose where the strap would rub. I went back to a choke chain and now he's nearly a loose leash walker...you just have to be consistently firm.

Bummed Out, 5/4/2009

ML from Denver CO

We purchased this lead for our 10 mo old Great Dane. What a miracle!!! She walked beautifully with it!.. BUT- We noticed after a few walks with the lead that one of her eyes was sagging. We took her to the vet and they said it was most likely from the lead and that if he could not flip her inner eyelid back into place, that she may need surgery. If it doesn't flip back there is a possibility of blindness over time. We are now headed to a pet optometrist. We are very disappointed, as we thought we found 'the answer' which has now turned into a problem...

Gentle Lead Collar is amazing!!, 3/30/2009

Lisa from Kansas City, MO

We have an English Springer Spaniel that is 50 lbs of muscle! Great dog - but walking was NOT fun until we got this collar. AMAZING difference! I feel confident taking him for long walks alone now because this gives you total control over the dog no matter the situation! I tell people about it all the time.

The BEST thing since sliced bread!!, 3/12/2009

Alissa Arp from Baumholder, Germany

This is BY FAR the best invention for dogs!! I am so amazed by quickly it changed my dog'd behavior. I have a German Jagdterrier, after having large breed dogs my whole life. Needless to say having a "terrier" is much different. Walking him was miserable until I got the Gentle Leader. Now we can enjoy leisurely walks. INCREDIBLE product. Make sure you follow all directions and fit properly.

Awesome, 11/17/2008

Sandy from Glassboro, NJ

Even with a pretty well-behaved dog, this gentle leader comes in handy. I only use the gentle leader with my 1 year old lab when we are in overly-stimulating environments such as the pet store or around a lot of other dogs. With a flat collar or training collar, he sniffs and pulls non-stop in these situations, but with the gentle leader, he is very well-behaved. It takes about a week for the dog to get used to wearing the collar so be patient! Practice by just putting it on and not waling at first to get him used to it. My dog was doing nosedives into the grass at first to try to remove it, but once he got used to it, he started to walk beautifully.

This is amazing!!!!!, 6/13/2007

Heidi from Sherman Oaks, CA

I love this collar. I have been training dogs for many years and had always had great success with pinch collars. However, my 5 year old Dane has always been a pain to walk because she always had to be a step ahead which would get me frustrated. I finally tried this, hesitant because I was not impressed with the Halti, and wow, Im amazed. It makes perfect sense, I used to work with horses and its the same type of control. Im so pleased. My 9 month old Dane is great on walks, but the metal from the other collar was staining his neck with a residue. With the gentle lead, there is no more of that. I highly, highly reccomend this collar!!!!!!

Gentle on your dog, AND you!, 4/9/2007

Melissa from Kansas City, MO

This collar is wonderful. I have a Lab mix and walking her was a huge chore. She pulled and pulled and gasped for air, making me feel guilty and frustrated every time. This collar makes it so much easier to correct her. No more yanking and no more gasping for air from either of us!. Great product!

I love this collar, 3/29/2007

Pam from Oregon

I have a large Great Dane and I love this collar. Just for pure size and strength of my dog this collar allows me to control my dog with relatively little muscle My dane is a 10 month old puppy and pretty well trained but still wants to play and chase cats, birds, etc on a walk and this collar helps me control that. I have tried the Halti and my dog is able to get that off his nose with very little effort.

A MUST HAVE FOR PULLERS!, 10/23/2006

J. Hurley from Phoenix, AZ

This product is a GOD SEND. I have 2 ten month old pitt bull pups that used to pull and choke themselves during their walks. After getting them gentle leaders, it was like magic! They stopped pulling! Walking them with a "loose leash" has never been easier! I HIGHLY recommend getting this product for ultimate HUMANE dog control.

Great tool, 10/13/2006

HD from Orange County, CA

We have two dogs, one puller, and one reactive. The Gentle Leader works great for both. I would suggest you read the directions / watch the DVD very carefully before you use it, as this coller does not work as well if it is not fitted correctly and it fits quite differently than a traditional collar.

, 2/16/2006

KJ from Mechanicsburg, PA

We have 2 labs who would just about pull our arms off when we walked them. With the gentle leader, we can walk each using 2 fingers in the leash. Neither of them like the feeling of it, and they both try to paw it off their muzzles, but that is a small price to pay for being able to easily walk our dogs. And they do adjust to it. Also, their whole gait changed when we put them on. Heads went higher, and steps were easier. Gentle leaders are great for dogs who love to pull.

Excellent when used properly, 12/2/2005

Erin from Lafayette, IN

I love the Gentle Leader, but it doesn't work for every dog. My dog is reactive and the Gentle Leader has helped her learn to behave around other dogs, but it did take some time to get her used to the head halter and to get the fit just right. I would recommend finding a trainer to help you learn how to use this tool effectively and fit it well. I generally recommend head halters to owners of reactive dogs and those that pull extremely hard on leash since it seems to be most effective in those situations.
