A Ferret Must!, 5/30/2017

katfayebrown from brookville, oh

We bought a ferret nation for our new baby ferret, who we are attempting to litter train. Without this scatter guard, the way she goes would cause a huge mess out the corner of the cage! The mess easily wipes off, and keeps the cage nice and clean. Delivery was quick, and while we had a little trouble putting it together based on the instructions we eventually were able to figure it out, and it works great.

Keeps the mess contained!, 5/28/2017

StevB from Connecticut

Should have bought these years ago. Bought this on a whim to see if we could contain the mess from our pets. They keep 95% of the mess in the cage and make clean up in and around the cage easier. They are made of metal and have metal clips to hold them to the cage pan that I think could be a little stronger. Other than that we like them.

Great for messy chins!, 5/23/2017

Pipersmom from Chicago, IL, USA

I love my Critter Nation cage. It's only flaw is that the pans don't have any kind of height to them to help contain messes. My chin seems to have a party in her cage every night, and I got tired of sweeping up her bedding every morning. My choices were Bass Equipment pans - which cost almost as much as the cage once you add shipping - or these. I decided to give these a shot first. They are perfect! They keep the bedding off of my floor and in the cage where it belongs. Some reviewers complained that their guards arrived bent. Mine were just fine.

Definately helps contain the mess, 2/19/2017

Sm25 from Bismarck, ND, USA

I used this at the bottom of my new ferret nation cage where I keep their litter box. It definitely helps keep the litter from falling through bars onto the floor. Its great that its metal because my ferrets try to chew on it.

I am a bit annoyed that it just clips on to the base, but it has been doing a pretty good job of keepin the litter and waste inside the cage. Good product overall.

Nice, but received a little bent, 8/4/2016

Alisha from Wisconsin

I love it. Its made out of metal and its easy to put together. Just the issue I had was mine was bent up a bit as if someone used it because the edges were closed in and i had to use pliers to open the metal up again. Not to big of an issue since its easy to bend. but its way cheaper than buying a new metal pan.

Disappointed when I received these, I thought the bottom tray was included. This is only for the sides. It's an attachment. Other than that works well for my chinchillas, keeps the droppings inside the cage

Great product., 4/19/2016

Mickbiddy76 from Cleveland, OH

This product really fixed the lack of potty training for my new baby ferret. Instead of him pooping on the corner of the cage and it oozing down the side, it stays in the cage. Only thing i dont like is that the hooks holding it on the tray are a little flimsy. But I really don't know how they could be any better. Other than that it stays on well and saves my carpet and my sanity.

good concept, bad product, 4/11/2016

sweetaction420 from Bismarck, ND, USA

Because our ferrers back into sides/corners they require high sides. These scatter guards provide a irratable solution in that they work for height but lack blocking any liquid from getting in behind them, thus requiring us to take them off and clean as we always have. I suggest making 1 single plastic piece with high sides built into them. This will not allow the liquid to go anywhere and have the high sides for them to back into.

Scatter guards, 12/21/2015

Athena88 from Rockford, IL, USA

They work for the most part, but it does not keep all of the Bedding from being knocked out of tray onto the floor. I also Think that they should have scatter guards for the second shelf In the bottom part of the cage and for the add on parts of the cage so that The pet cannot knock out the bedding from the shelves.

Worth it- potty that goes over the end is terrible. But I wish it was just a different solid bottom pan. This product is 4 metal strips that snap on to the plastic bottom pan your cage comes with

Does the job, 8/19/2015

Omegasmom from Gaithersburg, MD

I agree with some other reviewers of this in that some of the pieces are slightly bent when received. The metal is flexible enough though, that it can be easily put back into shape. Putting this in the cage was simple. I bought this for a different purpose than most other ppl probably buy it for. I have a chinchilla in the ferret cage, and he is potty trained (not for doodles but for number 1 ahem). I have never used litter in the cage because my chin does his business in the corner potty. I purchased these guards because chinchillas chew everything, and the plastic pans are a favorite target. These guards prevent him from chewing on the sides of the pans. Once he would get a hold of the side, he would keep chewing and damage the floor of the pan. Now with these guards, the fuzzy knucklehead can't keep destroying the pans. I recommend.

Product is ok, 6/12/2015

Patrick from Long Island

Found it a bit confusing as to how to put the guard on the tray - instructions were unclear. It's so-so in terms of how it works (litter and other objects still go over the side. I really think that the cage should have come with a deep plastic tray that was all one piece vs. having to attach a guard.

Extremely helpful for keeping things tidy!, 4/18/2015

Arik from NY

Before I invested in these, my three rats would fling food and waste out of their cage when they were playing, and since the pan that the Critter Nation comes with for both levels is so shallow, I couldn't provide them digging material. So, I took a chance and ordered the scatter guards, and it's been great! I can fully line both levels with litter now, and while some litter manages to get pushed under the edge of the guard, most of it stays in, so the rats love it! Some reviews said the guard is very flimsy and doesn't stay in place, but I don't have that issue. Once I clipped it all in place and put the pieces together, it turned into a pretty sturdy guard, and stays in place perfectly. Definitely worth the purchase- plus the price here on Ferret.com is awesome! One guard was about $30 anywhere else I could find it, so the value here is fantastic! I highly recommend this for anyone who has a critter or ferret nation cage!

Works great to keep in bedding, 4/16/2015

Silver from

I was disappointed with how they showed up... they were all bent out of shape and the box was ripped and bent.. but I believe that was from being on the truck... They were easy enough to bend back into shape and put on the trays.. I have them in both my ferret and chinchilla cages.. I would recommend these for anyone that uses bedding to help contain the mess.

It's a mess minimizer., 7/24/2014

PrairieDogPalace from EP, TX

Our Prairie Dog sanctuary uses these to help minimize messes. PDs are diggers and chewers. The scatter guards are chew-proof and provide a retaining wall to accommodate the necessary deeper bedding whereas the critter nation alone would allow 100% spill-over. Yes, they start to rust if left wet so be sure to dry them thoroughly when washing them (if you are using them for ferrets or other deep corner potty-ers, this product will rust much more quickly). Debris can get trapped between the scatter guard and cage walls or between guard and cage pan so when cleaning cages, you'll need to either remove the guards or shake/shift them about to loosen and remove debris.

I recommend this product, 7/9/2014

Jossie from Hempstead, NY, USA

I would have given this 5 stars but the problem is that bedding is still coming out of the cage and also underneath the guards where the gap is. They should have made this product directly on the pans instead of it coming separately. It should have also been made to go higher but I would still recommend this product.

not as pictured, 3/20/2014

Barb from Corpus Christi, TX

The photo looks like this is a tray. Actually, it's only the sides of the tray, no bottom. stuff can still get under the sides. I thought it was a tray I could easily remove and clean. Instead, the sides hook onto the bottom tray of cage making it harder to take out.

Lance from Sanborn, NY 14132, USA

I am not happy with this product at all. I thought I was going to be receiving deeper pans, not metal add-ons that I had to put together, are awkward and are going to prove hard to clean and replace every time I need to. The pictures on the website should have been a lot better.

Love this item, 5/25/2013

bmg1 from

I've got four ferrets, all the same age and one of them thinks he's a relative of dogs. He lifts his leg and this item lets him without letting his business end up outside of the cage onto the floor. I use PetSmart's Puppy Training Pads (XLarge) and I line the bottom pan with 3 of them and one goes under these guards so this little guy can't remove it. It really works for cleanup time. I just rollup the pads, wipe the scatter guards and re-line the cage. Cleanup is maybe 5 minutes and no mess on the floor. This really helps with the landlord :)

Not worth it. , 7/24/2012

kailen from louisville ky

The product is of cheap design. It is quite taller than what the picture led me to believe. While assembly was easy, it barely fits in the tray. The height even where the guard is cut lower for the ferrets entry and exit is a bit high and my fuzzies, and they are not overly fond of going over that height. Also if you have a litter box that locks on to the cage, the height of the guard may block some of these locks. All in all a bit of disappointment.

Lasts about a year, 6/17/2012

Annelise from Bellingham, WA

I bought the lower guards for my ferret cage last July, they don't fit perfectly but they do the job well enough. My complaint is that they only last about a year, and that's if you keep using them after the first signs of rust. I'm currently waiting until they're back in stock to get new ones because the coating has completely peeled off and they are COVERED in rust now. I also noticed they've gone up in price since last year, not sure why unless the quality has gone up as well.

So So..., 6/7/2012

MomOf2(Ferrets) from Eastern NC

I was so excited when these came in the mail. Mine were a bit bent, but was easy to remedy as long as you aren't heavy handed on them like a gorilla. I think the material is pretty good quality and they have to be flexible in order to fit properly (including the clips). I installed them all myself and never thought I would get close to breaking them. I love that they are angled so that any litter that is kicked up just slides right back into place. I have two issues with this product. One: The guards do not sit flush with the floor, so litter gets pushed under the guards and trapped until it builds up enough that it overflows onto the floor. Secondly, I like to take out my pans outside from time to time and give them a good scrubbing. The extra size that the guards add makes this job much more difficult than it should be. On the same token, I do not want to have to remove the clips each time I clean the pan as I am afraid the constant attaching/removing will cause the clips to break over time. If you are having litter troubles, try having plexi glass cut to fit the cage about 5" above the litter all the way around, and attach using bolts, wing nuts, and washers. This works MUCH better.

Pros: the height is perfect for keeping litter and bedding inside the cage. it was easy to put together and snap onto the tray. Cons: the metal used to make the parts is super thin and easily broken/bent. the texture of the material just made my ferrets want to dig at it. overall: Great concept but poor materials make this guard not so great. mine even came to me bent even though it was shipped in a flat box and the box was undamaged. When I bent the corner back it almost snapped off. I do not foresee a long future for this in my ferrets cage. :(

Could be a bit stronger, but otherwise great!, 4/17/2011

Caitlyn L from WA

I ordered a bottom set so I could use bedding in my Critter Nation, and while they are pretty cheaply made, they're doing a good job of holding in bedding. They came slightly bent and some places had the powder coating scratched off (Midwest seems to have some quality control issues), but for the price, they're not bad. I would like them more if they weren't so flimsy, but they easily saved me the $60+ I would have spent on having custom metal pans made for my cage and powdercoated, so overalll I'm pleased.
